On April 24 & 25, 2021 Nubian Productions & The Melo Cafe hosted a pop-up shop fundraiser to support the medical needs of a local Black community member. These pieces I crafted were donated as raffle prizes.

Cards for Community

I love paper art and collage and I’m most inspired about art that engages community, hence why I love making cards. Let’s send more snail mail! I’m most inspired by Queer/Fluid Identities and nature.

My handmade artwork has raised funds for Queer The Land, E-Sims for Gaza, and Operation Olive Branch for Palestinian families experiencing the USA funded Genocide and ethnic cleansing in Gaza. Art is an action and a voice of my values.

Below are some of my handmade cards.

Portraits of Myself & Others

I made these pieces of myself during a tough transitional time. I’ve struggled with “imposter syndrome” all my life, feeling like I’m not good enough to make art, I’m not Black enough or that I don’t fit in. In the years of learning and loving my ever changing self, I’ve discovered the root of imposter syndrome: white supremacy. In reality, there are no rules in how I should live my life. Everyday I am unlearning to uphold myself to a certain standard that this white-centered world. Life is about play and exploration. My very existence is art in itself. Below are 2 portraits, one of myself, and of my childhood best friend of over a decade.

Papier-mâché

(pay-per-muh-shay).

I began making these bowls a few days after I was in a car accident and injured my right wrist, my dominant hand. I am most proud of these pieces because they were molded and partially painted with my non-dominant left hand, which was very challenging, and also a unique experience being able to connect with muscles in my body I haven’t used before, while letting other muscles heal.

Wrist inflammation has been a challenge for me for the past few years. I’m curious to explore other ways to create without using my hands, and I want to train myself to become ambidextrous.

I’m grateful I’m alive, grateful for my friends who received these bowls as gifts, and I’m ready to continue my journey to physically and mentally heal through my creatives practices.

Flowers for Friends

All of these art pieces were made in June 2020. I was feeling the lowest I’ve ever experienced with the pandemic and the height of racial protests, thousands of miles away from my friends and family, and not very many strong bonds since being in Seattle, WA for only 8 months. I did find comfort in all of the gorgeous late Spring blooms. I made all of my friends favorite foliage. Art keeps me connected to myself and others.
